Universal Wrecking recently completed a project that required the recycling of various types of scrap material. Prior to starting the project, estimators visited the site and performed take-offs for the client of each type of scrap material that needed to be processed and shipped for recycling. After performing the site visit and take-offs (an industry term for estimating timeframes and quantities for a project) we were able to provide the customer with a detailed comprehensive estimate. The estimate listed and identified what the scrap value would be for the project based on the current market at that time and how it could offset the cost to perform the work. Based on the provided information the customer decided to proceed with the work.

UWC mobilized various machines to perform the work consisting of a Cat 345 Excavator equipped with a Labounty R100 Shear, Cat 350 Excavator equipped with a Labounty 3500R Shear, Cat 330 Excavator equipped with interchangeable attachments including a grapple, 2500R Shear and magnet to be utilized for final cleanup of processed steel. All material was processed, loaded, weighed and shipped to nearby recycling facilities.

The project resulted in a total of approx. 3,000 tons of various scrap material being recycled.

The combination of the equipment mobilized and Universal Wrecking’s experience trained crews allowed for the project to be performed safely, efficiently and completed ahead of schedule. The customer was very satisfied with the performance of the project.

MSDS and Chemical Safety

MSDS stands for Material Safety Data Sheet and is a common used document in the industrial construction industry.

MSDS are provided for employees use on each chemical they may come in contact with on a project. There are MSDS on everything from gasoline, to trichloroethylene (TCE), and even to whiteout. The MSDS cover a multitude of topics ranging from physical properties of the chemical to the associated health effects. Some MSDS are better than others, but all provide excellent information on the characteristics of the chemical you may be using.

Always be sure that you are using the latest version of the MSDS, information can change from time to time. Obtain an MSDS for all hazardous materials that are brought on the job site.

How to Read an MSDS: The product is often identified by a chemical name and often a trade name (i.e., polychlorinated biphenyl, PCB).

Section One contains the suppliers information including the name, address, and phone number of the company that makes the chemical, and the date the MSDS was prepared.
Section Two has a listing of the hazardous components and the regulated exposure limits. Sometimes the chemicals components will not be listed if the chemical is a trade secret.
Section Three contains the physical data of the chemical (i.e., vapor pressure, solubility, reactivity, etc.).
Section Four includes the fire and explosion data covering the flash point, lower explosive limit (LEL) and upper explosive limit (UEL).
Section Five involves the reactivity of the chemical. This indicates whether or not the chemical can be mixed with water, air or other chemicals.
Section Six covers the associated health hazards that delivers critical information to help keep you safe.
Section Seven outlines the safe handling procedures; and
Section Eight gives guidance towards controlling associated hazards.

If you have difficulty understanding the information on the MSDS, you should contact your Corporate Health and Safety (CHS) prior to using the chemical. Also check out the OSHA Quick Card with new requirments: as of June 1, 2015 all SDSs will need to be in a uniform format.

Dismantlement, Removal and Recycling of Decommissioned Equipment

Universal Wrecking Corp was recently hired to perform the dismantlement, removal and recycling of decommissioned equipment consisting of (2) Chillers and (2) Drive Trains at an industrial facility in Central, VA.

The first task associated with the project was the rigging and removal of the equipment from the existing facility. The equipment was disconnected from all associated piping and utilities. Upon being disconnected the equipment was removed utilizing hydraulic jacks, skates and a 15,000 lb. forklift. After being staged outside of the facility the equipment was loaded onto trailers with a 35 T Hydraulic Crane. It was then transported to a designated laydown yard within the facility for dismantlement and recycling.

After the equipment was transported to the designated laydown yard it was offloaded utilizing a 35 T Hydraulic Crane. Upon being offloaded the dismantlement process of the equipment began. Employees utilized a combination of oxy / acetylene torches and a Hydraulic Excavator equipped with a Grapple and Shear to dismantle the equipment in sections that could be managed and loaded onto trailers. After the equipment was loaded it was transported for further processing and recycling to a pre-determined facility.

The project was completed safely, on schedule and without incident.

Tips For Pre Planning Rigging Projects

Pre-planning before performing a rigging project is a essential task for ensuring the task is done safely and completed successfully. All personnel involved must be properly trained and certified in the proper utilization of tools and equipment required to perform the project.

Prior to beginning a rigging project there must be a JSA done, which lists the description of the task and identifies any potential hazards and what will be done to eliminate them. It will also list what tools are required and the steps in order of when they will be performed. There are many tools and equipment utilized for rigging tasks depending on each specific project, the most common are wire rope slings, nylon slings, shackles, dollies / skates, lifting jacks, chain blocks, cumalongs, overhead gantries, forklifts, and cranes.

When utilizing the above tools it is imperative that they are inspected before use to prevent safety issues and confirm that they will operate correctly. There should be a rigging inspection form completed which will include a check list of what to look for. If you are using wire rope chokers it is important to look for breaks, any worn sections and to check if the wire rope is starting to fray. If using nylon slings they should be inspected for cuts, breaks, splits and if they are worn. If any of the previous symptoms are seen the rigging should immediately stopped being used and put in a secure area for proper disposal.

If heavy equipment such as a forklift or crane is utilized a extensive checklist must be performed and operators must be properly licensed and certified to operate correctly. The above steps are only a brief overview of a type of work that requires extensive pre-planning and experienced, trained and certified personnel.

PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)

Demolition and rigging workers need to have proper protection to ensure their safety and the safety of the job site. To provide that protection workers utilize PPE. Personal Protective Equipment, (PPE) can prevent employees from potential hazards associatedwith their workplace. The minimum required PPE on a demolition or rigging project consists of the following items:

Hardhat
Safety Glasses
High Visibility Safety Vests
Leather Palmed Work Gloves
Work Boots

Depending on the project site and task being performed additional PPE may be required. The site supervisors evaluate the work task and perform hazard assessments to identify if additional PPE is required and to confirm that the appropriate personal protective equipment is being utilized to perform the work task at hand.

Examples of some work that would require additional protective equipment are as follows:

Work to be performed in a man lift or if a worker is 6’ from an edge would require a safety harness that is attached to a retractable. This would allow the employee to work safely and be 100% tied off at all times. If a worker is performing work utilizing a grinder or demo saw he would wear a face shield to ensure face protection and ear plugs for hearing protection.

The site supervisor trains or provides training to all employees to ensure they are familiar with the proper utilization of PPE and to ensure applicable safety procedures are followed.

Project Schedules

Project schedules are a essential document for project planning and are utilized to successfully perform demolition, dismantling and any other type of work in the industry.

Prior to the start of work the estimator, project manager and scheduler will meet and list key task / activity items. Each task will have a duration associated with it, showing a estimated start and completion date. While developing the schedule many variables will come into play.

· Weather
· Overlapping tasks
· Customers needs

Taking into account the above variables will allow the scheduler to develop a accurate and realistic schedule. Once the schedule is complete the key managers will meet, review and finalize.

In order for a schedule to be a useful tool it must be updated weekly and discussed with the manager on site to make sure that the durations and goals are obtainable. While performing work there is possibilites that you will run into unforseen delays. Example of unforeseen delays are changes in the original scope of work, weather, equipment breakdowns and overall site conditions changing.

Schedules are utilized on a daily, weekly, monthly and yearly basis depending on the needs of each individual project. It is also helpful to perform two week look-aheads for site workers to make them aware and informed of  the project goals. Employees can give there input and explain to  management if there are additional variables that might effect completion dates.

The development of a project schedule is a important part for completing projects within estimated budgets and timeframes.

Rigging, Dismantlement & Demolition of Water Tower and Pipe Bridge

Universal Wrecking was recently hired to perform the rigging, dismantlement and demolition of a 185' Water Tower and associated Pipe Bridge spanning across an active street at a former manufacturing facility in New Jersey.

Due to the location and close proximity of the water tower to live power lines and existing site structures it was decided that the water tower would be dismantled in sections utilizing two cranes.

Universal Wrecking utilized a 550T Hydraulic Crane to perform the picks of each section and a 165T crane to hoist workers in a certified man basket over 185' in the air in order to perform rigging and dismantling services.

Prior to the project starting the following activities were performed:

* A detailed safety and execution plan was developed for the safe rigging and dismantlement of the water tower and supporting structures, so as not to disturb the power lines or roadway adjacent to the project site. The plan also outlined where temporary barricades and other protection were to be located and placed to prevent injury to people and damage to adjacent buildings and facilities to remain.

* The pre-demolition conference was performed at the project site to discuss and coordinate the procedure of dismantling the water tower, safety, schedule and the placement of temporary protection.

* Required permits necessary to perform the work were obtained.

The tank and pipe bridge were dismantled following the approved rigging plan and utilizing torches to cut the steel sections. Once lowered to the ground, a Hydraulic Excavator equipped with a shear processed the scrap steel. After the scrap steel was processed, a Hydraulic Excavator equipped with a grapple, loaded trucks that transported the steel to a pre-determined recycling facility.

The project was completed safely, on schedule and without incident.

Job Safety Analysis

The purpose of a  Job safety Analysis (JSA) is to identify how a work task will be performed and to ensure that all actions necessary are taken to perform the task safely and to prevent injury. The JSA will list the sequence of the job tasks, list the potential hazards associated with each task and finally provide the recommended action to minimize the risk of potential hazards.

The JSA should be prepared by the foreman overseeing the work to be performed. The task will be evaluated and potential hazards will be reviewed. The typical format of a JSA is as follows:

The next step will be to describe the task to be performed. After describing the task the foreman will list what PPE is required. Example of a list of required PPE is as follows:

After the JSA is complete a meeting will be held with all workers to discuss. After the meeting the employees will sign and date confirming that they have reviewed and understand their responsibilities to perform the work in a safe manner as per the procedures listed in the JSA.

Demolition Equipment Maintenance

The maintenance of equipment provided by a demolition contractor is a key component to a successful project. Due to the nature of demolition work, equipment needs to be inspected daily and the necessary maintenance needs to be performed accordingly. Weekly / Daily Toolbox Talks

The purpose of Weekly / Daily Tool Box Talks is to provide a group forum where discussions can take place for employees regarding specific safety topics on a project site.

Performing Weekly / Daily Tool Box Talks will address workplace concerns and provide recommendations for those concerns, assist in planning for a work task, and will encourage overall safety on a project site.  It provides employees with the opportunity to contribute ideas and make employees aware of specific safety issues.
 
When having a safety talk numerous safety issues can be addressed or discussed, common examples of topics are accident reporting, cold stress, crane safety, demolition safety, heavy equipment operation, fall protection, responsibilities, pinch points, fire extinguishers, first aid, housekeeping, electrical safety, hand & power tools, ladders, manual lifting, weather, scaffolds, rigging safety, motor vehicle safety and general safety.

Weekly/ Daily meetings should not go beyond 15-20 minutes and are most effective in the morning before work is started. When a meeting is held in the mornings it refreshes an employee’s mind set to perform work safely for that day’s task. The meeting would be held by a supervisor on the project and would involve participation by employees in regards to the meeting topics.

Employees will be made aware of the location and time for the meetings beforehand to allow them sufficient time to write down or think of any concerns that they may be present on the site.

After supervisors address workers with the chosen meeting topics, employees are encouraged to add ideas and alternative solutions. Allowing employees to participate and brain storm during meetings, develops and encourages a team characteristic within the crew and is a proactive method for limiting safety issues on a project.

Universal Wrecking Corp. (UWC), a premier demolition contractor that operates on a nationwide basis, recently celebrated their 15th year in business.

Steve Vesseli, President started UWC 15 years ago with the concept of providing a complete suite of services to clients instead of just being known as specialty contractor. His goal was to create a company that not only could provide demolition services but also other complimentary services including concrete crushing, scrap metal recycling and salvage. Easy to Scrap Your Old Car

Scrapping your junk car / vehicle at Universal Recycling & Scrap Iron Corp. is as easy as “1,2,3”  Whether you bring the vehicle to us or need it picked up we make this process as simple as possible for you.

Upon arrival, your vehicle is weighed on our “big scale” which has a digital read out for you to see your weight.  Once weighed you get paid!  After collecting some information you are assigned a customer number so we can easily track you and your “scrapping history”.  After just a few minutes we pay you cash on the spot for your vehicle. 

Now that your vehicle has been brought in as scrap, our knowledgeable and experienced staff begins to “Detox” the vehicle.  The vehicle is hoisted up so fluids, including but not limited to; gasoline, transmission fluid, oil and anti-freeze can be drained and properly recycled.  Once completely drained, the engine, battery, radiator, tires and catalytic converter are removed for further recycling.  After the car is completely stripped it is loaded into a trailer and shipped to a mill for further processing.

• Approximately 10 million vehicles are recycled annually
• Cars are the number one recycled product in the United States
• Recycling steel saves energy and natural resources. The steel industry saves enough energy to power about 18 million households for a year, on a yearly basis.
• Recycling metal uses about 74 percent less energy than making metal. Thus, recyclers of end-of-life vehicles save an estimated 85 million barrels of oil annually that would have been used in the manufacturing of other parts.
• Recycling a car keeps 11 million tons of steel and 800,000 non-ferrous metals out of landfills and back in consumer use.
• Before the 2003 model year, some vehicles that were manufactured were found to contain mercury auto switches, used in convenience lighting and antilock braking systems. Recyclers remove and recycle this mercury before the vehicles are shredded to prevent it from escaping into the environment.

Demolition Equipment

One of the most common pieces of equipment used in the demolition industry is an Excavator with a Shear.

Recently,Universal Wrecking Corp. has added a CAT330 Excavator with a LaBounty UP70 to our fleet of equipment.  The LaBounty Universal Processor is an amazing piece of equipment that has assisted our demolition crews to work safely, quickly and more efficiently.

The UP70 has three separate jaws allowing for various capabilities. First, there is “Shear jaw” which is used to cut steel.  Second, there is a “Concrete Pulverizing Jaw” which is used to downsize big concrete to small concrete.  Lastly, there is a “Concrete Cracking Jaw” which is used to crack large pieces of concrete.

Since acquiring the excavator with the UP 70 we have been completing jobs weeks before completion dead-lines and have even saved on job costs.

What is Cogeneration?

Cogeneration is a process where a single fuel source, such as natural gas, can be used to create or produce both thermal and electrical energy.

Universal Wrecking Corp. recently completed the demolition of a former COGEN Facility consisting of the following tasks:

•     Demolished two four story corrugated metal buildings with stacks
•     Demolished one concrete building
•     Demolished concrete stack
•     Demolished multiple concrete scales associated with building

This project was completed on schedule and in a safe manner.
